What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing usually involves a nasal swab, throat swab, or saliva test that detects the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a form of coronavirus that can lead to severe symptoms in some people. Knowing if you have COVID-19 makes it easier to get the treatment you need and take precautions to prevent spreading it to others.

Do I need COVID-19 testing?

If you’ve been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or if you have symptoms of the illness, COVID-19 testing is for you. The symptoms you may experience due to COVID-19 include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

You might also develop severe difficulty breathing, pneumonia, confusion, chest pressure or pain, or pale gray-blue lips, skin, or nails.

What should I expect during COVID-19 testing?

During COVID-19 testing at LexaMD Urgent and Primary Care, your provider reviews your medical history and symptoms. They may collect your saliva or swab the inside of your nose or your throat.

Your provider also completes a physical exam if needed and listens to your heartbeat and breathing. They look for signs of COVID-19 complications or other medical issues.

LexaMD Urgent and Primary Care also offers antibody testing, which is a blood test that detects the presence of COVID-19 antibodies in your bloodstream. If you have the protective antibodies, you may have had and recovered from COVID-19 or received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Your primary care provider discusses the results of COVID-19 testing with you when they receive them, which may be soon after your test, later on the same day or within a day or two – depending on the type of COVID-19 testing you’ve completed.

What should I do if I test positive for COVID-19?

If you test positive for COVID-19, it’s important to do what you can to prevent spreading the virus to others. Avoid close contact with other people and wash your hands often.

If you need treatment to minimize bothersome symptoms, the LexaMD Urgent and Primary Care team may recommend rest and fluids, over-the-counter medicines, prescription medications, intravenous (IV) treatments, breathing treatments, or hospitalization in severe cases.
